Coppelia and Contemporary
The night before our Round 2 performance, we had to have a stage placing for our contemporary. Originally we were meant to have it at 15:30 in the afternoon, but as we were getting ready we were informed that we must come back at 23:00 that night! I was so angry because our performance the next day was at 12:00, which meant that we had to wake up at 6:30 to do my hair and make-up, class and get ready. We were both very tired as it is! But there was nothing that we could do. So we had our rehearsal, but they did not have the correct lighting that we had asked for! So that made the rehearsal even longer. Thank goodness we have Thoriso because he sorted everything out. That was the shortest nights sleep I have ever had before a performance!
The time came for us to perform Coppelia. I was even more nervous than when we performed Flower Festival! James was the calm one this time. Once again, we names were announced in Russian and the music began and before we knew it we were finished. Thank you to those who watched us live online, we hope you enjoyed it. I personally was not very happy with my performance, I feel that my nerves took over. So I knew that when we did the contemporary I had to give it everything I had if I wanted to redeem myself. I got ready and went over the contemporary with James and really got into character. Now it was time for the contemporary. Our names were announced and I walked onto stage to take my place. Once that music started, I felt the music in my soul and I performed with such emotion, so much so that at the end of the duet, I began to cry because I was feeling it so much! The contemporary was choreographed by Angela Revie and is about a girls that imagines the one she loves being with her, but sat the end he leaves and she realizes that it was not real, it was just a dream. The choreography and music is so beautiful.
Now was the worst part, waiting to hear if we made it to the finals!!! We waited till 23:30 that evening for the results. To discover that neither of us had made it. When I did not see either of our names, my heart just sank because I knew that in the contemporary I must everything I had into it! We went home that evening in disbelief and with heavy hearts also knowing that not being finalists, we would not receive free food vouchers, so now we had to pay for lunch and dinner ourselves till the end and watch the finals instead of dancing in it. I was so sad that I didn't get to wear the beautiful Satenella tutu that Alta and Alice had kindly let me use :(
The next day James and I could not go to class, we were too sad, so we just wondered around Perm and explored. It was very interesting, but not much to see.
That day was the contemporary choreography round and we had already performed our contemporary so we were not needed. When we got back to the hotel, one of the organizers called us and said that she felt really bad for us and that we should come back to the theatre that evening to see the contemporary results. That evening we all went to the theatre and waited in the foyer once again, this time getting to know one of the American dancers who lives and works in Russia. His name is Mario and he is a very talented dancer and such a wonderful person. He just loved hearing about South Africa.
That late hour came and we checked the results. To our surprise, we found out that Angela had won the bronze medal for contemporary choreography! So our performance paid off!!! We were quite chuffed. And once again we received a phone call and we were told that we could now get the food vouchers and that they wanted us to perform our contemporary in the Gala performance! Things were looking up for us and we were no longer as sad as we had been.
