Closing Ceremony!OU

The closing ceremony

We were so happy that we were going to be performing in the Gala performance. That morning, we were having breakfast and Thoriso came waltzing in and told us that Oksana, one of the organizers called and said that we must be on stage at the awards ceremony to collect Angela's prize as well as our own prize!!!! WHAT!!! We won the Galina Ulanova award for the spirituality of dance. We were screaming in that room and we could not believe that we were not even in the finals but we were awarded a prize! When we got to the theatre, the list was up on who had won awards. To our shock, not only did we win the Galina Ulanova award, but we had also won the Press Jury Award for the best duet! Oh we were so thrilled!!!

When we were sitting on stage in our nice clothes waiting for the awards ceremony to begin, Vladimir Vasiliev came and spoke to all us dancers. Vladimir Vasiliev is a LEGEND here in Russia! He was part of Rudulf Nureyev's generation. He just walks into the room and people are clapping and taking pictures, just to give you an idea of his fame here in Russia.
The curtains opened and the audience was so full! Not one seat was open! They announced many things, but all in Russian, so we had not clue what was going on. They announced the Galina Ulanova Award and Overton Jessica and Fraser James from UR (which is South Africa in Russian) and the entire audience whistled and applauded! We have never once had an audience applaud for us like that! Vladimir Valiliev took the microphone and spoke ABOUT US (in Russian). This legend spoke about us!!!! We are going to find out from one of the translators what he said about us because that alone is a once in a lifetime... thing!!! We received a medal each, flowers, certificates, gift bags and $ 1000!!! One of the press jury members also spoke about us in Russian. Wow I still can't believe this happened to us. We were made to feel so special. We also received our press jury award for the best duet and I collected Angela's Bronze medal, certificate and flowers for her. This was and evening that we will never forget, a dream come true! I don't think we would ever have made it this far if Thoriso had not helped us! He was one of the only people that believed in us (besides all of you reading this (",) ) and gave up his time to coach us and polish us and made us believe in ourselves! I am forever grateful to you Thoriso, I have no way of thanking you. You really have changed the way I think of myself and the way I dance.

Some pictures (",)

This was at 6:30 in the morning. Thoriso really is fantastic with hair, I would never have been able to do this on my own. The picture below just describes how I was feeling, EXHAUSTED!!!

This was our performance of Coppelia. I am so lucky to have this beautiful costume! Thank you SO much Alta! You really are amazing for making something so stunning!!!

Our award winning Contemporary choreographed by Angela Revie.

This is the route we walk everyday to the theatre.

Round 2

Coppelia and Contemporary

The night before our Round 2 performance, we had to have a stage placing for our contemporary. Originally we were meant to have it at 15:30 in the afternoon, but as we were getting ready we were informed that we must come back at 23:00 that night! I was so angry because our performance the next day was at 12:00, which meant that we had to wake up at 6:30 to do my hair and make-up, class and get ready. We were both very tired as it is! But there was nothing that we could do. So we had our rehearsal,  but they did not have the correct lighting that we had asked for! So that made the rehearsal even longer. Thank goodness we have Thoriso because he sorted everything out. That was the shortest nights sleep I have ever had before a performance!
The time came for us to perform Coppelia. I was even more nervous than when we performed Flower Festival! James was the calm one this time. Once again, we names were announced in Russian and the music began and before we knew it we were finished. Thank you to those who watched us live online, we hope you enjoyed it. I personally was not very happy with my performance, I feel that my nerves took over. So I knew that when we did the contemporary I had to give it everything I had if I wanted to redeem myself. I got ready and went over the contemporary with James and really got into character. Now it was time for the contemporary. Our names were announced and I walked onto stage to take my place. Once that music started, I felt the music in my soul and I performed with such emotion, so much so that at the end of the duet, I began to cry because I was feeling it so much! The contemporary was choreographed by Angela Revie and is about a girls that imagines the one she loves being with her, but sat the end he leaves and she realizes that it was not real, it was just a dream. The choreography and music is so beautiful.

Now was the worst part, waiting to hear if we made it to the finals!!! We waited till 23:30 that evening for the results. To discover that neither of us had made it. When I did not see either of our names, my heart just sank because I knew that in the contemporary I must everything I had into it! We went home that evening in disbelief and with heavy hearts also knowing that not being finalists, we would not receive free food vouchers, so now we had to pay for lunch and dinner ourselves till the end and watch the finals instead of dancing in it. I was so sad that I didn't get to wear the beautiful Satenella tutu that Alta and Alice had kindly let me use :(

The next day James and I could not go to class, we were too sad, so we just wondered around Perm and explored. It was very interesting, but not much to see.
That day was the contemporary choreography round and we had already performed our contemporary so we were not needed. When we got back to the hotel, one of the organizers called us and said that she felt really bad for us and that we should come back to the theatre that evening to see the contemporary results. That evening we all went to the theatre and waited in the foyer once again, this time getting to know one of the American dancers who lives and works in Russia. His name is Mario and he is a very talented dancer and such a wonderful person. He just loved hearing about South Africa.
That late hour came and we checked the results. To our surprise, we found out that Angela had won the bronze medal for contemporary choreography! So our performance paid off!!! We were quite chuffed. And once again we received a phone call and we were told that we could now get the food vouchers and that they wanted us to perform our contemporary in the Gala performance! Things were looking up for us and we were no longer as sad as we had been.

Round 1

Round 1

My hairstyle for Flower Festival, which Thoriso did for me :). The best coach ever!

We had to wake up at 6:30 am so that I could wake up, shower and for Thoriso to do my hair and get to the Theatre and do my make-up and do class and get ready for the performance at 12. We were 2nd to perform, thank goodness because the nerves are so exhausting! There was a guy before us and I had to turn my back to him so I could keep focused. Then the moment came where my number and name was called, the James' number and name was called (in Russian and backwards. your surname is your first name in Russian). Then there was a slight pause and then the music played... We walked onto that stage as the characters that we were meant to be and we danced our hearts out and the audience loved our artistry. They couldn't stop coming up to Thoriso and talking to him about the way we performed. People love ballet here so much and just that alone is so inspirational! After our performance we took a picture in costume (the most precious item I own) and then could relax and calm down until the results came out that evening and we made it to Round 2 (",)
Was so special for us.

The food

The food here in Perm has been very... interesting... I will say that I am not used to having rice for breakfast...

This was our breakfast the one morning... Sausage and I can't even tell you what else, but it didn't taste so bad, We are full for many hours.
This was something that Thoriso got for lunch the one day. He thought it was a dessert, but when he bit into it, he said it tasted like mash potato. James had a taste and couldn't figure out if it was mash potato or custard, was a very funny moment and just wanted to share it.
Another mornings breakfast, rice and a bright pink sausage (",)

We are loving the experience here in Perm, something new and exciting happens everyday and we are learning something new all the time, whether it be something related to ballet or a new Russian word (we are really struggling with the language). I was put in the company girls dressing room, so after rehearsal I wanted to go change, to discover that the room was locked. Now I had to rush around the theatre (which is 6 stories) to find the key. Then I ask a lady whose face is familiar to help me, but guess what, she can ONLY speak Russian! So here we are running to the key room asking more Russian people for the key that is not there, then being taken to the changeroom and get spoken to in Russian and I have no idea what she is telling me, then she just takes my clothes, locks the room and we go back to the key room and discover that my name is no where on the competition dressing room list. But I remember the directors assistant telling me that I must use dressing room 438, but now how do I tell her this... Anyway, she makes a phone call and after much Russian chatting she takes me back to the same dressing room and points to the table with the mirror and says "for blush". I just nodded and said thank you in Russian which I'm not even going to try and spell ;)

The day before Round 1 for us

Last night we had our stage run which Thoriso recorded for us to see. Well let me tell you, anything that could go wrong, went wrong... But it was 21:55 at night and we had been up since 7:00, so we were very tired, which was part of Thoriso's strategy. He says that he wanted us to feel the most tired we have ever felt so that when we perform, with the nervous, fatigue and stress it will never feel as bad as it did during that run. Even today was so much better than yesterday. I can see that James is a bit nervous, maybe a lot, but I know that we are going to dance the best we ever have tomorrow afternoon.
So far from the competitors that I have seen ( I don't want to make myself too nervous by watching these amazing dancers) the men are absolutely amazing!!! I won't watch the girls ;). These men have the most beautiful feet and legs, they do the most stunning turns and jumps without any fumbling around. Pure, clean beautiful ballet!!! I know James is going to do so well tomorrow as he has a presence and character on stage that no one else has :).

I will let you know how we do tomorrow (",), please think of us tomorrow at 12:00

Inside the Tchaikovsky Theatre

The theatre was named after Tchaikovsky due to the fact that Perm is where he was born. The ballet company here is called the Perm State Tchaikovsky Ballet. I am very luck to be able to be using their stunning dressing rooms! The company consists of about 44 dancers but the Director would like to expand the company to 100 dancers but is waiting for the new theatre to be built as they all feel that this theatre is too small, um... it seems quite big to me!

The Theatre we will be performing in.
